How the Estimate Works
The Tonopah Formula Is an Informal Guideline, Not Nevada Law
The gross-income version of the Tonopah Formula multiplies the monthly income difference by a cumulative percentage derived from the length of the marriage, the lower-earning spouse’s age, education, and disability status. The cumulative percentage is capped at 50 percent. The formula separately produces a suggested duration.
Nevada courts retain discretion to award support that appears just and equitable after considering the statutory factors in NRS 125.150. Property division, financial need, earning capacity, health, marital standard of living, homemaker contributions, and other evidence can materially change the result.
